Mine to Market
How a rough crystal in the earth becomes a certified gemstone in your hands — every step of the journey.
Mining
In Sri Lanka, gem mining is largely artisanal. Miners dig shafts or open pits into gem-bearing gravel layers called illam, typically 3–10 metres below the surface. The gravel is hoisted and washed in a nearby stream to separate gems from sediment.
Rough Sorting
Raw gem crystals are examined by experienced sorters who assess potential colour, clarity, and size. At this stage, decisions are made about whether to heat-treat the stone or sell it rough. Some collectors specifically seek rough unheated material.
Cutting & Polishing
A skilled gem cutter shapes the rough crystal into its final form. The goal is to maximise the stone's colour return and minimise waste. Cutting affects up to 30% of a stone's final value — a well-cut stone outperforms a poorly cut one of identical rough quality.
Laboratory Certification
The finished stone is submitted to a recognised gemmological laboratory — GIA, GRS, Gübelin, or SSEF — where gemmologists assess species, colour grade, clarity, origin, and treatment status. The certificate is the stone's permanent passport.
Trading
Certified stones enter the international gem trade through direct sales, dealer networks, and gem shows such as the Hong Kong Jewelry & Gem Fair, Tucson, and Basel. Price is negotiated based on certificate, appearance, and market demand.
To You
We purchase directly from trusted miners, cutters, and dealers whose supply chains we have verified. Every stone arrives with its certificate and provenance documentation. Shipping is fully insured door-to-door.
Our Commitment
Short chains, more trust
The traditional gem trade involves many intermediaries between miner and buyer. Each step adds cost and reduces accountability. We work to keep our supply chain as short as possible — ideally miner → us → you.
We know the names of the miners who found many of the stones we sell. That's not marketing — it's how we ensure the conditions we won't accept (child labour, unsafe mines, unfair wages) aren't present in what we sell.
